Practicing Foreign Languages is a video in which words shift between languages through sound and mishearing. A French word like amateur becomes the Arabic phrase amma toor (“your mother is a bull”) when pronounced in an English accent; German terms such as Fingerspitzengefühl turn into “spitting,” while heimweh is broken apart into “Heim hat mir weh getan” (“home has done me harm”). The work was made in San Francisco, after leaving Cairo and moving between linguistic systems—English, Arabic, and German—none of which fully felt like a native tongue.
